Governor signs gay rights bills

The same-sex marriage firestorm erupted anew yesterday after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill recognizing some out-of-state gay marriages in California and another proclaiming a day of recognition for slain gay rights leader Harvey Milk. Supporters of last year’s Proposition 8, which reimposed the ban on same-sex marriages in California, excoriated both actions. “He has once again demonstrated his willingness to fly in the face of the will of the people. The people have articulated very clearly where they stand on this issue,” said Jim Garlow, senior pastor of Skyline Church in Rancho San Diego. “The constitution of California says that only a marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California, and he’s willing to blatantly sign a document which totally counters the language of the constitution.”
